I'd suggest giving Holly Lisle's fantasy books a try--I really love her work, and it's the sort of stuff I read when I was in that weird stage between young adult/adult fiction (and still read as an adult). The books are definitely geared toward adults, but the characters are usually young women. I'd specifically recommend her Secret Texts trilogy--Diplomacy of Wolves, Vengeance of Dragons, and Courage of Falcons. I believe she also co-authored a book with Marion Zimmer Bradley, the author of the Mists of Avalon, so that might be another good place to start.

I have also read the Mists of Avalon and I loved it too! If you liked it then I would suggest the Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini. He only has two of the series out right now but the other one is set to come out in '08. The books are Eragon and Eldest. A movie has been made of Eragon and is set to premiere in theaters December 16th. I loved this series and own both of them. They do have plots that are a little complicated and at times I had to re-read some of the chapters so I could completely understand what was being planned. These are really good books and were not slow or too hard and are great page turners. I would suggest these to anyone who loves a good fantasy. Hope you find a book that works for you.

There is a series of books (4 at present) by a writer named George R.R. Martin. The series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the first book is called 'A Game of Thrones'. This is probably the best fantasy epic I've read since Lord of the Rings. If you're a little tired of the light-weight young adult fantasy stuff out there, you will LOVE this series. Some of the best characters I've seen in recent fiction.

Dragonjousters series(joust, alta, sanctuary) by Mercedes Lackey. The setting is ancient Egypt.Hunger, anger, and hatred are constants for young Vetch, rendered a brutally mistreated and overworked serf by the Tian conquest of his homeland. But everything improves when a Tian jouster requisitions Vetch to become the first serf ever to be a dragon boy. His training is intense, and his duty clear-cut: to tend his jouster, Ari, and his dragon, Kashet. He discovers that, because Ari himself had hatched Kashet, the dragon is different from others that have been captured live in the wild and must be drugged to be made tractable. Vetch finds he really likes and understands dragons, and soon he becomes the best dragon boy of all. He still harbors anger, however, toward the Tian invasion. Could he, perhaps, hatch a dragon, and then escape to help his people?
Mercedes Lackey's Take a Thief is the tale of Skif, a young orphan reminiscent of Oliver Twist, making his way in the knock-and-tumble neighborhood between two of Haven's outermost walls. Skif is intelligent, good-hearted and creative enough to forage up three meals a day in a place where food is scarce and kindness almost unheard of. After a chain of events leave him homeless, Skif lands in the lair of Bazie, an Faginish ex-mercenary who trains thieves...until he is "Chosen" by one of Valdemar's magical horses and becomes a Herald serving the Queen.
Dresden file book series by Jim Butcher. There are 8 books in the series beginning with stormfront. It narrates the story of Harry Dresden, chicago's only professional wizard who works as a detective. He stands between the general population who is ignorant about the supernatural world and the monsters-vampires,werewolves,fey.He is aided by Bob,a talking skull.Karrin Murphy-a police officer and Thomas-a white court vampire.
Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, Book 1) by Jim Butcher.(From Publishers Weekly)At the start of Butcher's absorbing fantasy, the first in a new series, the barbarians are at the gates of the land of Alera, which has a distinct flavor of the Roman Empire (its ruler is named Quintus Sextus and its soldiers are organized in legions). Fortunately, Alera has magical defenses, involving the furies or elementals of water, earth, air, fire and metal, that protect against foes both internal and external. Amara, a young female spy, and her companion, Odiana, go into some of the land's remoter territories to discover if military commander Atticus Quentin is a traitor—another classic trope from ancient Rome. She encounters a troubled young man, Tavi, who has hitherto been concerned mostly with the vividly depicted predatory "herdbanes" that threaten his sheep as well as with his adolescent sexual urges (handled tastefully). Thinking that Amara is an escaping slave, Tavi decides to help her and is immediately sucked in over his head into a morass of intrigues, military, magical and otherwise.

Try Terry Pratchett or David Eddings. Terry Pratchett writes humor/satire fantasies and is quite frequently hilarious. David Eddings' Belgariad series (start with Pawn of Prophecy) is a five book epic with a good pace and the writing is simple but elegant.

Hi there. I'm the author of a new medieval fantasy book that you might like. The title is THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY. It's 445 pages of action, adventure, magic, mystery and mayhem. If you like Conan, LOTR or Harry Potter type books, this may be one you'll enjoy.
Good luck, whatever you decide to read!
Jon F. Baxley (Author, Editor, Ghostwriter and Proofreader)
THE SCYTHIAN STONE (eBook only)
THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (eBook and hard cover)
THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming fall '07)
Major Media Reviews:
Publishers Weekly
STARRED Review. A fast pace, sly humor, amusing dialogue and a richly researched background lift Baxley's fantasy, the first of a new series set in medieval Britain. When Merlin's long-ago apprentice Kruzurk Makshare (aka the Boozer) receives a dreamlike visitation from the legendary mage, he learns he must destroy another former apprentice, the villainous Seed of Cerberus. To do so will require a visit to the demon-guarded Blackgloom Keep. Enter young Daynin McKinnon, who discovers a curious rune-covered headstone, which may be the fabled Blackgloom Bounty, and brings it to Kruz's attention. Kruz believes it will provide entry into the fortress, while Daynin hopes the sale of the stone will restore his family's fortunes. The colorful cast of good guys and ne'er-do-wells includes the Pictish ghost of Brude McAlpin liberated from his tomb, assorted pursuing Caledonians and a bemused Prior Bede, whose monastery serves as a hiding place for the Blackgloom Bounty. Suitable for fantasy enthusiasts of all ages.

Shannara is a quick read. I would consider trying the Chronicles of Amber (which is just a great series period) and the David Eddings books.
