An up-tempo song is one that is faster paced, usually a bright subject matter, a happy song, essentially. Contemporary would be anything from about the 1950s on. If the show you're auditioning for is a rock musical, though, look for something with a rock beat. Up tempo songs are usually the ones to show off your ability to perform.

A ballad is slower-paced and usually more dramatic. This one will show your singing and your vocal range.

Some tips:
--make sure the songs are comfortable for you to sing
--know the lyrics
--have either sheet music or a CD in your key (the key you've rehearsed it in -- which you bring will depend on what they provide and the CD would be one with just the music, no vocals -- this is your audition, not the one someone else recorded). If sheet music, try to have a copy the pianist won't have to turn pages.
--if you have any special requests for the pianists, take a moment and talk with her or him.
--dress in something you can move in, as you may also be called on to do a dance audition

umm...it's hard to explain

but if you are not trained, this is how i suggest you look at it

if you are singing a song and it's so fast that you have difficulty finding a spot to breathe, then that's an uptempo

if you are singing a song that notes are long and you have to hold your breath for many words, then that's a ballad
