well she is ignorant to other cultures, cant really hold her for asking about seasons, im sure people have told her about the middle east and believe all regions are the same. i live in florida for a while i have yet to see winter take place in the area i lived. Most of her comments are just ignorance due to curiosity, if she meant to offend you im sure she couldve came up with better material. Since you never visited the U.S. there are people from all over the world living there. You cant judge a country by one person's action.

Well i am glad you are trying to educate people on the situation in india. The knowledge level varies. But trust me some folks in india probably believe that USA is just like what you see on TV. You know, they might ask me if I live near Oprah or something. She is actually trying to learn which is admirable. I'm sorry her ignorance upset you. I would like to know more about hinduism, particularly integration of religion with daily life and how that plays out. i would like to learn more about caste issues, etc. - still fascinated by the hindu priest who once told me that usually people in intercaste marriages would eat meat. he obviously disapproved of intercaste marriages and this was only 10 years ago. I remember seeing questions on here when the students in india were protesting set-aside admissions for lower caste persons. I wonder how similar/different that issue is to what we have here with blacks....the former slaves which were imported as labor and so it is a different situation. i am wondering how much the 'average' lifestyle, economic-wise has improved in india since the rise of bangalore and outsourcing etc. I'm wondering if there's much microenterprise there (grameen bank type stuff) and how it's working. You can write me if you want to tell me about these things. gimpagain@yahoo.com

I was born in India, Raised in The U.S. since I was 2 years old by American Parents. I probally would have asked some of those questions. I don't know a thing about India. It wasn't intended to be rude. Just curious.

I understand why you might be upset over this, but it sounds to me like she just doesn't know a lot about India and Indian culture. The best way for her to find out would be to ask someone with firsthand knowledge, i.e. you. If you wanted to understand something about American culture, wouldn't you ask one of us?

Assuming that every Indian works in computer tech support, however, was ignorant of her.

As for sending pics, she might be in to you.

Sadly, a lot of Americans have no knowledge or incorrect knowledge about other countries especially if they are in Asia (I used to live in Indonesia and people would argue with me about where it is and what it was like.). Having lived overseas, having friends who are Indians, and actually being interested in India, I know better, but a lot of "educated" people who have the resources to know better don't.

I am an American, and people like this embarrass me. It is true, that many Americans live in a culture bubble. It is true, that instead of seeking knowledge and being curious in a culturally acceptable fashion, sometimes we seek answers in the way that she has done. But I think that it is not fair to judge all Americans in light of one ignorant person.

As in India, some people in the US grow up in small communities with no one-on-one exposure to the outside world. As in India, these people ask questions when they meet someone so they know more about that outside world. As in India, they sometimes make errors in that effort.

You should have used that opportunity to educated her. I have stereotypical questions asked of me all the time...Instead of making assumptions, she's just honestly asking....
I ask stupid questions like that too; it's just better than going around being ignorant. At least she knows the answer now. Don't get offended educate and lead her away from her ignorance

She is what I would like to call "ignorant" along with this ignorance comes rudeness and lack of couth. Unfortunately there are several people out there that are like that, but it doesn't mean everyone is. Its amazing how uneducated some Americans are, but there are many of us who actually know better. :)

not everyone is like that. She is just curious and naive. I suggest answering her odd questions and ending that acquaintance. Don't worry, all Americans aren't that rude. Good luck with that. Have a great day!
