I live in a warm humid climate. Houses here are made of concrete NOT wood. Could this be termites? Should I call an exterminator or rip open the couch?

well.. depending on how old the couch is, rot could be an issue. Don't call an exterminator yet, they will just steal money for something you could do yourself right now. Tear apart the couch, if you see any bugs, then go get a smoke bomb and it will kill all of the bugs.

Why don't you look underneath? It could be critters, or it could be a malfunctioning part.
