There is another job opening in my company that I am able to transfer to. My boss does NOT want me to go and thinks I won't take the job. How do I tell him that I want that job? Assertiveness is not my strong point.

I would tell him thanks to all of his great training and supervisory skills you feel ready to take a step up in the company....it is a step up, right? Just let him know that you appreciated everything he has taught you and that you can't wait to sing his praises in another department....and make sure that is all that you do.

Quite honestly, if you have told ANYONE at work about this move.....he already knows. Make sure you are available to help train or support the person who takes your place.....and once again DO NOT say anything negative about the boss to the new person. That stuff travels faster then hot lava.

Good luck in your new job!

If you are sure you can get this job (and won't be stuck with this boss being angry with you), go to your human resources department and tell them you want the job, and they, knowing this boss's personally, will be able to help you choose the words to say or may even offer to talk to him for you.

If you can't be sure that you'll get this position, you need to gather up your strength and tell him you want this new position. Come up with a list of reasons why this would be a good career move for you. Think about what in this new position is more fitting to your skill set, and point that out to your boss.

If you really, really, really can't talk to the man face-to-face (and I mean this should be a LAST resort), write down your thoughts in a letter and give it to him. Explain that you have been happy working with him (even if you haven't), but this is a great opportunity for you, and you'd really be a better fit in the new position. Thank him for all that's he taught you, and find some other positive things to say.

Start the letter or conversation with how much you've enjoyed working for him and what you have gained from this position. Then move into the "it's time for me to move on" part.

I assume you will have a new boss with the other position? If so then your current boss cant stop you from taking another position. You should just be able to accept the new job and turn notice in. Unless you have some weird contract that says you cant take another job within the company.

I went through this recently so BELIEVE me I know how tough it is... it was really hard for me because I genuinly like my boss, he's a great guy and taught me a lot.

You have to very politely say, "I wanted to make sure that I informed you of my decision before anyone else. I really appreciate all of the help and knowledge you've given me. Because of your support I feel I can accept this position and do well in it. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to make this transition easier for you."

even if it's bullshit, tell him something like this... you're still going to be working with him if not under him and you want to stay on his good side.

Good luck.

It's YOUR job and YOUR life. You can't let your boss run it for you! Just ask for a word with him, and tell him that an opportunity has come up elsewhere. Thank him for the opportunity to work for him and for all the exprience you have learned in his company. Be polite but firm. Good luck!

do what is best for you, not for your boss!
Your boss doesn't pay your bills or feed your family.. sometimes bosses don't want to see one go up the ladder. They expect you to stay with them forever! Look at the pros and cons. If all is good, then go for it or you will regret this opportunity.

Get the job and then say bye bye! He's not the BOSS of you....oh wait a minute....yes he is. He's not the boss of your career choices and life.

Don't tell him until after you are confirmed that you can make this move.

Explain to him that this is a better opportunity for you and tell him that you are turning in you notice. If you can't do this to his face, try writing it to him in a note. Sometimes writing is easier than talking.

I agree with assert or die!.......you have no choice! It's not like your boss can beat you or fire you, so do what you have to and fear nothing, for there is nothing to fear.
