3 nearly broke guys decided to share a hotel room. the sign outside the hotel said rooms for $30. They went inside and each paid $10 to the clerk. When the night clerk came on duty he realized the room was overcharged, because of a $25 special. The night clerk sent the bellboy up to their room with five $1 bills. The bellboy not being too smart did not know how to divide $5 among the three men. so he put $2 in his pocket and gave the three men the $3 to divide among themselves. This made each man paying $9 each. If $9 times 3 men = $27 plus the $2 the bell boy kept equalling $29, where did the other $1 go?

No, the $27 does not already include the $2. Wrong.
No, you don't subtract the $2, you DO add it. Trying to ACCOUNT for money here. Don't get caught on this, wrong.
Yes, it's easy to say $25 + $2 + ($1 X $3)= $30 anyone can do that.
No, they didn't pay $8.33 each. Wrong.
If you chose any of the above, you're not reading.
In basic math it's 9X3=27+2=29...where's the $1

tip for bellboy

Do you know the answer? Anyway, good question.

Edit: I see something fishy here.
$30-$5 (the money that was given to the bellboy)=$25
but $30-$3 (the money that was given to the three men)=$27.
The two dollars were included in the $27. Otherwise, you messed up the question. If you can prove me wrong, post your response up.

Second edit: I realized that $30-$5 equals $30-$3-$2, which also equals $25. But if ONLY three dollars were given back, then the equation would be $30-$3, and that equals $27. But $2 dollars would have to be subtracted from $27 to get $25. As a result, this is what happens when you don't think about the problem correctly. (This is also a reinstatement of the first edit.)

OK, many of the answers explaining the $27 includes the $2 are correct. Perhaps they're not explaining themselves clearly enough. I'll try.

The three men paid $27 TOTAL for the room. The $2 that the bellboy kept was from that $27 not in addition to it. The clerk got $25 of the $27 and the bellboy got $2 of the $27. The remaining $3 was returned to the men. Was this explanation any clearer?

The question "where did the other $1" go implies that $27+$2=$29 was explaining where money WENT. It clearly does not. The $27 is money that left the men, and the $2 is money that arrived at the bell boy.

(Thus the $27 DOES, in this sense, include the $2.)

So you're adding apples to oranges.

Here's where the money WENT: $30 = $25 + 2$ + $3

or $27 = $25 + $2

The 3 men paid $30, but $3 was refunded to them. So they paid $27 after the return of $3. This is made up of $25 for the room and $2 in the bell boy's pocket.

Look at it from the standpoint of the original $30.

Each man has $1. (3 total)
The bellhop has $2.
The hotel clerk has $25.

Total $1 x 3 = $3 + $2 +$25

3+2+25 = 30

The men paid $27 [3x(10-1)], $9 each. $27 was received [$25 for the hotel + $2 for the bell boy].

This is a classic problem that shows how few the people are that truly understand math. It's a good puzzle, though.

The correct "basic" math equation involved, if you read the problem, is
27 - 2 = 25, not 27 + 2 = 29.

If they already paid the $25 and get $3 back and $2 is in the bell boy's pocket, all the money is there.

There is a prime example of what happens when you don't follow the proper proceedures when doing math. the equasion is not (9X3) +2=29 it's 30 +(-2)+(-3)=25

25/3 = 8.33 they each paid 8.33 so that 3*8.33=$25 + 2 in pocket plus $1 each...tiems 3 = 30....your WRONG in stating they didnt pay 8.33 each
