About a month ago, I was playing with my nephew in the park and hit my knee on a piece of equipment, ever since then I have been getting sharp pains periodically. (Not old age, I'm only 22) I have taken Ibuprofen sometimes to ease the pain, however I was just curious as if I just bruised my knee or if it was something more seriously than that and should take the time to go see the doctor. The sharp pains feels kind of like a charlehorse that one might get in their leg. Any thoughts?

You need to build up a bit more leg muscle. There is too much pressure on the knee joints, due to you putting too much weight on them. Stronger legs mean that you will support yourself with your muscles, rather than just your bone structure.

ACL injury
One of the most common problems involving the knee joint is an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The anterior cruciate ligament (also called the ACL) is one of four ligaments that are critical to the stability of the knee joint. A ligament is made of tough fibrous material and functions to control excessive motion by limiting joint mobility. Of the four major ligaments of the knee, the ACL injury is the most common knee ligament injury.
What is the normal function of the ACL?
The anterior cruciate ligament is the primary restraint to forward motion of the shin bone (tibia).

What happens when there is an ACL injury?
When an ACL injury occurs, the knee becomes less stable and with sharp pains. The ACL injury is a problem because this instability can make sudden, pivoting movements difficult, and it may make the knee more prone to developing arthritis and cartilage tears.

So I recommend for you to go see a doctor.

Probably just bruised, but to err on the side of caution with the injury a month ago, see your doc. The reason I suggest this is one day I was practicing an exercise I've been doing for over 20 years and I tore a ligament.

could be torn cartilage...

It happened to me...the best thing to do is get a MRI and talk to a Dr.

But in the reverse order! ;-)
