Most humans fail to appreciate just how fragile their bodies really are. And, when considering risk, most humans fail to make an accurate assessment. For example, there are some people who believe the thrill of some extreme sport is worth it, even if the worst thing that happens is they die. This, however, is not an accurate assessment of risk because it fails to take into account the probability that if injured, the person will not die. They may very well wind up paralyzed from the neck down. Worse yet, they may wind up in a persistent vegetative coma. Death is not the worse thing that can happen to a person. Yet, many thrill seekers choose to ignore these possibilities.

There is one other thing at least as bad as people who do not wear helmets and that would be: All Terrain Vehicles do NOT come with roll bars. Thousands of people every year let their children ride these things...and accidents happen even under the most careful supervision. And, everyone continues to be surprised when the vehicle throws their children and/or rolls on top of them. Go figure.

First, this question: Why, instead of inventing the seatbelt, didn't man just not use cars?

Also, remember that the first helmets were for war. You can't necessarily refrain from being attacked in war. I think a more pertinent question would be, "why do humans start wars?"

It is human nature to engage in stupid things. Why did we invent a giant rubber band to throw ourselves off bridges? Why did we invent a giant steel tube to go hurtling through the air and then invent a parachute to jump out of it? Why did we invent rock climbing, rock diving, white water rafting, or any other extreme sport that involves injury? It is also human nature to be curious and want to conquer everything.

as medical science advanced the process of natural selection was on a downslide. Intelligent people saw the rampant outbreeding by inferior genetic specimens... something had to be done. So a few geeks got together and started comeing up with ways to improve the gene pool: football, bungee jumping, skydiving, steroids (which would help some performance and hurt other performance), these are just a few examples. Everywhere you look stupid people are breeding, and us geeks will continue to develop ways to get them out of the gene pool... :)-

because dangerous risks are exciting. plus, our list of great accomplishments would be terribly short if we pussyfooted around the globe expecting gravity to NOT drop something on our skulls. live a little. build a skyscraper or something.

People are driven by speed and danger. Adrenaline baby!

Try it, it's fun! My boyfriend owns a sports bike and I love it it! I used to be so scared to ride, but not anymore!
