I just came back from a baby care class at my hospital and they told me that studies have shown that alcohol does NOTHING in the aiding of removal of the cord.
if anything it can irritate the babies skin. Mother Nature will do it's work and it will fall off without any help from us.
just be sure to keep the diaper and things from rubbing on it and irritating it.

Hope that Helps! :)
Good Luck with Baby!

Alcohol actually PREVENTS the cord from drying out and falling off. We were advised at the hospital not to put anything on the stump (son is 4 mo old) and his cord fell off after 7 days. Everyone on my birth board who used alcohol, however, complained that the cord was still there up to a over a month later.

They're now figuring out that alcohol doesn't help removing the cord, it kills the bacteria the cord already has to make it fall off. Peroxide kills protein cells, best not to use it on skin EVER. For the cord, it's best to just leave it alone and let it fall of by itself.

Only Alcohol, as said above, it helps keep it Dry. Later when the little stub part come of I put it in a Plastic Bag and put it in his Album, may be weird but that what I do.
I also saved the EPT strip. It still shows Positive after 6 years. But, I still not believe it. lol!

You shouldn't use peroxide, you should use the alcohol cause the whole point is to dry the cord and close the belly button.

As some people mentioned previously it is better not to do anything, the umbilicial cord usually falls off within 7 days. Follow what the doctor or nurse advised you.

my doctor told me NOT to use acholol the it made the drying process slower. my daughters stump fell off in 3 days, because i listened to him. they gave me these saline packets to wipe of her bellybutton. No infections or anything.

No. You're to use alcohol because a) it'll kill germs when the stump falls off, and b) it'll dry the area out and keep it from becoming or staying "gooey".
