I think England decided to own a lot of the rest of the world as well - try half of Asia, India, the Americas and Australasia as well :)
Yes, I think people might hold a grudge against the country that took over yours and never gave it back.

For a long time, England had a bad habit of deciding that it owned the rest of Europe. Some of the atrocities that they committed in order to take possession of their neighbors is still held against them. The Scottish and the Irish, in particular, have long memories.
