I just purchased a set of books from a student selling door-to-door for the Southwestern Company out of Nashville.Tn. I had never heard of the company; apparently theyve been in business since 1868, and I looked them up on the internet. They seem legitimate; however, I still feel a little queasy about post-dating a check for 200 and some dollars to get books that will be delivered in August. Anyone else ever purchased books from this company?

my parents ordered from this company about 40 years ago...we ordered from them about 20 years ago...about 30 years ago my husband worked for them...it was hard work but he feels it was a valuable learning experience for life. Never have had a problem with delivery.

The best thing to do is call your police department to find out if they are even legal in your community. I remember students selling books, magazines, cleaning agents a few years back. They work on your sympathy to students saving for college tuition. However, it is part of a scam. Often they sell worthless products or other items at a high mark-up. Their "boss" who was in a car dropping them off in various neighborhoods was arrested for some kind of charge.
I know they have to show you some type of license showing they are a legitimate company. Don't let their web page fool you. Anyone can create a page and put whatever information they want on it. The best thing to do is to call the local police department and find out if it is even legal to sell in your community.
