No. Steve Martin is very up front about this. He was never a comedian. He is an ACTOR. A very good one at that. He broke into show business as an actor PLAYING a comedian. Once he got established in the business he ditched that typecasting and got to doing the roles he really wanted. He now focuses on serious dad acting roles.

I never was much of a Steve Martin fan even back then. He just never had the kind of humor I really cared about. I think he is a better actor than comdedian. He does quite OK in that genre.

No, he just grew up. He became a very, very good writer (his books are great) and his movies became more intelligent. "LA Story" for example is a classic movie, as are "Father of the Bride" and "Cheaper by the Dozen". You don't have to stick an arrow through your head to be funny when you're 50.
