It's because we Americans love gadgets. There are so many things on a car that you wouldn't pay for if it were an option. For example, the overhead compartment where you keep your sunglasses. It's nice, but I wouldn't pay an extra $200 to have it in my car. If you had to pay a few hundred bucks for each cup holder, how many would be in your car?

How about the new Honda Ridgeline with the trunk/cooler under the bed? It's cool as heck, but it's not really necessary.

I was taught the habit of locking the car doors and fastening my seatbelt before I even start the car. The feature is useless to me. There's no real reason to have the doors lock automatically when you hit 20 mph (or whatever it is). But, it is a cool trick that impresses people, so it's there.

All of that being said, if you're really asking why it's a good idea to lock your doors, it's the things you pointed out PLUS when you're near pedestrians, criminals may decide to open your door and steal something laying on your seat, and it helps keep the doors from popping open in an accident.

So little kids don't open the door while the car is moving. That's also why the back windows don't go all the way down. Some cars also have a lock on the driver's side that locks all the other windows in the up position, and another that makes it impossible to open the doors from the inside.

It is to stop hi-jackers from getting into your car when you stop somewhere because on most car the front two doors will unlock when you pull on the handle from inside.
