If you are going to install this as primary drive in a computer, then the O/S install disk will take care of wiping the disk for you if you choose new clean install. If you are installing it as a secondary drive, just format it and it will be ready to use.

If you have a Windows CD then put it in and start / restart the computer. You can then install a clean copy of windows or repair the current. Choose clean copy.

Or if you have an old Windows 95 or 98 boot disk, then bootup with it. That should take you to the Dos prompt. Use one of the following commands and press enter:

format c: --> this will do a clean format and erase everything (slow)

format c: /q --> this will do a wuick format (just erases the file tables no the actual files - no secure)

Boot from a floppy then format the hard drive. For WinXp you can boot from the CD then format the hared drive. Note that this does not wipe the data, only overwrites it. If the data must be destroyed first there are many programs that can do that - check with the hard drive manufacturer (the bios will tell you what drive you have) and you can down load a free program to wipe it.
