I don't think they are a real point. It has something to do with the earth's magnetics.

Of course it's true... there merely points on the Earth. So is the corner in the pavement where your driveway meets the sidewalk.

The reason the north and south poles are important points, geographically speaking (not that I'm saying your driveway isn't important), is that they act as reference points for the farthest north or south on may travel on Earth, if one has the inclination and it dressed warmly enough.

The poles are the ends of the earth's rotational axis. So yes, they are points on the earth.

What else did you think they were?
