Not to be confused with "morals" which is society's code of conduct.

Ethics is what keeps society from degrading into total chaos; I would define ethics as the moral core from which we decide to do (or not to do) something based upon its effect on others (including inanimate as well as animate objects) as well as ourselves.

how you should live and act. What you should do and what you should not do. The debate over ethical theory begins not at what exactly ought we to do but why should we do some things rather than others. for example: is it divine law? is it social order? is it my own benefit? etc.
