There is nothing that can be done .
Even if we stopped everything that we've been doing thus far, the "greenhouse gasses" that have been released today, will still have an effect years from now.
We are, alas too late.
Our doom is eminent.
While our planet will continue, we've started trying things too late, and we like all other things will pass away. Our end will be a whimper, like a dieing dog!
what can we do? simply pray weather you are a christian, Muslim or Hindu, what ever religion you are even a scientist you must pray for intervention, else we come to naught!

should a politition be allowed to preach his religion, and prostilitize, while seeking office

First the premise of global warming (as stated by the schizophrenic leftists ) is based on junkscience to scare people into thinking an arrogant world view that "Man caused it" and can impact it.

Fact -- the earth's mean temperature has fluctuated substantially over the last 4.6 billion years from a ball of molten magma to an ice ball planet.

In the last 2,000,000 years we have fluctuated between hot and cold and will do so on cycles based on the earths orbit, it's position it relation to the SUN. If you google solar weather perhaps you might truely get a glimpse into the heat wave.

We are in an interglacial period. Mean earth temperatures rise during these periods.. In terms of simple science No amount of CO2 or NO2 or 02 we "pump into the environment" have more then a localized impact.

Greenhouse gases are released and reabsorbed in the normal processes that have been going on since the precambrian.

Get a brain.

Nature is resilient. It will compensate for what we do and correct the situation.

I'm not completely convinced what we are seeing as global warming isn't just a minor fluctuation. When you look at the horizion of the ocean it looks like a straight line. It's only when you look close to shore you see it's actually composed of many waves of various heights.

The earth gets warmer. Ice melts. The sea level rises. More exposed liquid water means more evaporation. Higher moisture in the atmosphere means more clouds. More clouds mean more heat reflected back into space cooling things down again. Less heat more snow. More snow the ice caps and glaciers get bigger. Less mositure in the air, less clouds, things start to warm up again. It's a cycle.

We had a little ice age recently. We've had bigger ones in the past. I'm just not sure we aren't looking at the trees so hard we don't see the forest.

No -- we should not give up! Einstein didn't, Astor didn't, Bell didn't, Edison didn't, Firestone didn't . . . the list could go on.

But maybe it's not as difficult as we think. Naturopathic remedies look to the source of the problem, not the "band-aid".

So which came first, the chicken or the egg? Matter or thought?

Do you know that studies were done to lower crime in Washington (lucky them -- they have the highest crime rate in the U.S. -- wonder why? lol) One such experiment was for a numbered group of people to simply pray. And voila! It actually worked. There was a marked decrease. Interesting concept as stated in the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know"

GLOBAL WARMING/THE ENVIRONMENT IN GENERAL

Any and I mean any environmental cause or approach must be grassroots in nature. Having PhD's talk about global warming and having those representing industry interests debunk these present theories is a high level and almost an entirely futile effort. Don't get me wrong, it is great that someone with Al Gore's connections and exposure is getting the word out. However, people are people they want to see results.

Yes, the expression is now trite but still true, "Thing Globally, Act Locally". Watching the sky over a city, town or even a more rural area become darkened by smog has local impact, people take note and actually see A PROBLEM. A problem that can measured in terms of air quality or perhaps an AIR QUALITY HEALTH INDEX like the one that the provincial government in Ontario, Canada is in the process of implementing. You can measure results (however small) in terms of air quality and the affect it has on the health care system (those with breathing problems, doctor's visits, etc). It certainly speaks to the advantage of a UNIVERSAL health care system (however, actually implemented) as it actually makes sense to improve the environment as it keeps people healthy (a humanitarian cause) and when health care it publicly funded it affects the public coffers when people become ill therefore it even makes better financial sense to keep the environment a top priority.

Plus any approach must be entire with a complete overall plan (the big picture). Including recycling initiatives, energy solutions (alternatives/renewables can now present a real potential financial threat to the big oil companies and even power companies...), government involvement at all levels, public transit, greener vehicles in general (Hybrid, Hydrogen, Conventional electric, bio-diesel, ethanol), conservation in all energy arenas, ETC!

Economic viability is the real sell as many of these solutions are just that economically sensible (ensuring we look at the entire picture). Yes as more people use solar, wind and other renewable energy sources the cheaper the technology will get. Two of the newest billionaires have earned a large portion through renewables Solar (India I believe) and Wind (China I believe). Yes in many ways developing nations and economies will be the first and early adopters of such renewable tech as they are just building much of their infrastructure.

So what do we all need to do? GET INVOLVED ! Contact your local government about improving your recycling program, contact provincial/state/federal government about the adopting of these new technologies (renewables such as solar/wind), buy gas with ethanol in it and demand it, use and demand bio diesel, buy products with less packaging and demand manufacturers to reduce packaging and to offer a price break as a result. More ECONOMIC VIABILITY! After all energy diversity just like economic diversity is the safest and best bet for good long term results and return on investment.

Joe...

Of course the earth has warmed. That's why we don't live on glaciers right now. Warming brought us from the ice age to now. One must be awfully egocentric to think that 75 years of human industrial activity has done what millions of years of natural activity hasn't. Get some perspective and context, people.

Remember when global cooling was the great crisis in the 1970's? I guess that didn't catch on, so we've moved on to a new professional hysteria.

Never give up!
Yes, we have made mistakes. Yes, we really screwed up. And - of course - dear President Bush is not helping anything.
That being said - have you been to the doctor for help? You sound like a very depressed person. So much negativity! Nothing positive at all. You have to be positive to to "help" a situation. Negativity can only make the matter worse.
Good luck.

Efforts are still made only to prevent Global Warming. We assume Global Warming also, to be a natural phenomenon and we have already crossed our limits in preventing it.
Being Research Engineers we have made an attempt to suggest a solution to this so called Global Warming in the form of futuresystematization.

Why would you give up? If everyone did their best to change their ways and help, there is a very good chance the earth and atmosphere can heal itself.

Stop with the defeatist attitude.
