Seems as though the two main ones, Symantec and McAfee, don't work...

Don't buy either of those products made for the public - they're absolutely horrible. Ironically enough though, the Symantec Client Firewall and AntiVirus for network applications (v10) is wonderful. It has an option in the setup to update automatically (instead of from an network server) is unobtrusive, takes very little space or speed, and has worked seemlessly for me for a year now.

AVAST! antivirus is 32-bit and 64-bit for windows. Tiny Firewall is available in 64 bit (30 day free trial); ZoneAlarm had a 64 bit beta program, but that has closed, without mention of the final version being released.

McAfee and Norton are two good makes for about £50/£70 or you can free download Zone Alarm which works very well indeed.

the only one you can use is from www.trendmicro.com search for vista oh and follow the safe install tip on the download page failure to do this will result in your system crashing and the program not to load despite it installing.

the code you need to run is from command prompt:
type bcdedit -set nointegritychecks ON

this is a beta release of the pc-cillin internet security program. trust me its a damn good program better than the comparable one from norton/symantec. the license for the trial is good for about 4.5 to 5 months. and a one year licence is under £50 less than that of norton costing up to 3 times as much for a comparable package.

Any software that is compatible with XP 32 bit will work with XP 64 bit.

Semantic and McAffee will work. I have used them both. They do not take advantage of the 64 bit architecture but they work fine.

You must have a different problem, it isn't the 64 bit chip.

I really like Zone Alarm, through Zone Labs. It is a very thorough program. There is a free version that you can try before buying. Check it out!

Window Defender is a great spyware program, but it is not a firewall.

it dosent suprise me that norton and mcafee dont work on your system
for a reliable anti-virus that will work on your 64bit machine go to http://esd.element5.com/demoreg.html?productid=300042690&languageid=1,and download the evaluation of f-secure
in my opinion ,it is the best all-round anti-virus,with built in scanner for viruses, trojans, worms, spyware and adware, and also rootkits(programs that install themselves deep in your hard drive and are normally very hard to detect)
as you can see,f-secure has a massive amount of features, and also has a internet explorer sheild, which i like because it sits in your standard toolbar, giving you the reassurance that you are protected while on-line
it dosent have a firewall,i use service pack 2 ,avalible from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx,this will also give you extra saftey for your p.c including pop-up-blocker,automatic updates, and firewall(incoming traffic only)
if you need a 3rd party firewall,go to http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp;jsessionid=EltyV2teuLZ2xkOXispDaE3tGWqIN1YMHGcCZlUDLGgfWzz12kA1!806185568!-1062696903!7551!7552!NONE?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za,and download the free version of zone alarm,a good allround firewall(intrusion detection)
i hope these tips will sort out your security problems
good luck

yeah windows defender. doesnt x64 have advanced virus protection on its own? i thought it did. anyway, not every 32bit piece of software will work on 64bit, but most will. isn't it amazing, the speed boost you get with this os compared to 32bit?
