Sounds like you have OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

The phrase "obsessive-compulsive" has worked its way into the wider English lexicon, and is often used in an offhand manner to describe someone who is meticulous or absorbed in a cause. Such casual references should not be confused with obsessive-compulsive disorder; see clinomorphism. It is also important to distinguish OCD from other types of anxiety, including the routine tension and stress that appear throughout life. A person who shows signs of infatuation or fixation with a subject/object, or displays traits such as perfectionism, does not necessarily have OCD, a specific and well-defined condition.

To be diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, one must have either obsessions alone or obsessions and compulsions.

It may mean you have OCD tendencies. OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Or maybe your just bored....if you feel like the need to count things is interfeering with your day to day functionality you may want to ask your doctor or go to a councelor. Try to see if there are other things that you are very ritualistic and particular about.

Hi! My son and I do the exact same thing. I'm worse than my son, though. I took my son to be tested, and they diagnosed him with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder ( OCD ). They put him on medication, and he is doing a lot better. Seeing that, I then went to the doctor and was diagnosed with it too. We also have depression. So, now that we take meds for it, we are a lot better. Some days are better than others, but it's better than it was without meds.
Also, Therapy might help to learn new behaviors.
Or, it could be something else. Who knows! I suggest you see a Dr to be properly diagnosed!
Best of Luck!!

Has a similarity with autism, but that doesn't mean you are. Could be OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). Do you find yourself fervently washing your hands, or folding your clothes and cleaning too?

Don't take the answers you have received so far as gospel. If you are truly behaving in the way you describe, go and see your GP who will be able to ascertain a) if there is in fact a problem and b) what choices you have to overcome it, if you have.
