Wheel Balancing- this balances the rotating tire. If the tire is not balanced, it will cause a vibration to the vehicle, depending on how out of balance, possibly at ANY speed. A Balance at about every 12-15K miles will lengthen the life of the tires as the balance will change with wear.

Alignment- This makes sure that all tires on the vehicle are pointing the same direction. While there is a negligable amount of toe-in, or the leading edge of the tires pointing toward eachother, essentially, it keeps one tire from pulling outward or pushing on the vehicle. A proper alignment makes the tires last longer, fuel mileage greater, and eases pressure on the suspension system and just generally makes driving the vehicle much easier.

Wheel balancing concerns all 4 wheels. It involves rotating the wheels on a machine to detect, and correct with weights, any wobble caused by one side of a tire being heavier or lighter than the rest. Think of putting a great wad of gum inside a Frisbee and throwing it: it will wobble and misbehave due to being out of balance. If not correct, this can make for quite an unpleasant driving experience. It can alter mileage by causing you to change your driving habit to minimize the wobble. Feeling a shimmy while driving is the usual indicator. Wheel alignment concerns the front wheels. Simplified, it involves adjusting the mounting assemblies for the wheels to get them pointing inward or outward slightly, and not quite perfectly perpendicular to the ground according to specifications worked out by engineers for the model of car. If not correct, this will cause uneven tire wear, shortened tire life, less driver control, poor mileage, and a host of other bad things. Uneven tread wear is the usual indicator for this.

Your wheels can wibble wooble if they are not balanced straight. A automobles alighment sets the axles so that the are fully inusred to direct the wheels going straight. If you are driving down a straight road and your sterring wheel is lopsided, it is probably ready for an alighment. Not having the axles alinged right will cause the wheels to wear out on the sides and not lay on the road correctly. I hope this helps!

Wheel balancing is done to correct a vibration usually noticed at higher speeds usually 45 mph and up.If your car is wearing the tires abnormally or if it pulls to one side or if the steering wheel is not centered then you should have the alignment checked.

wheel balanced: the wheel itself is balanced on all sides.
alignment: both wheels are verticle and evenly spaced from top to bottom.
The first deals with the individual wheel; the second deals with both as a team.
