With great difficulty. I've been an insomniac since birth - ask my poor parents. I also sleepwalk and have nightmares constantly.

When I can get to sleep, I manage through a combination of luck and routine. I always sleep on my left side withmy right hand touching my lips, and my left hand under my pillow. I have to have my right ear covered, and I must be right on the edge of my pillow. I either tell myself a story, or think through my problems from a ridiculous number of perspectives etc. Sometimes it takes me four hours to fall asleep, leaving me with an hour or two to sleep. Sometimes I can't sleep at all.

I can't sleep when I'm too hot, somewhere new, overtired, or in pain/ill.

Count backwards from a thousand and imagine yourself descending down a spiral staircase into the depths of a vast black hole. Never take pills, they leave you feeling worse than if you had not slept. You need to find what's bothering you, perhaps something you want or are aiming for. Change your whole life style, move to a remote rice village in Isan and start again. I live on the edge and sleep 1 or 2 hours a night, It hurts and I've tried everything in the world, only getting to where you want to be works.

Some people it does the opposite, but if I go running or do some type of exercise a couple hours before bed I fall asleep pretty well. It's great. I sleep well and I get fit too!

Go to bed. I use the bed only for sex and to sleep.
Get rid of the TV in the bedroom. Without the TV you will probably have more sex, and also go to sleep faster.
If I do not go to sleep within 15 minutes, I get up and do things for a while and then try it again.

It quite easy when you work hard all day and don't have naps. If I am still not tired by night then I do some work or read till I doze off.
