It's meant so that you should collect it until you have enough to make another shirt.

Your clothes -- and your whole body, for that matter -- constantly shed little flecks of matter. This is normal "fair wear and tear" -- nothing to worry about. This is normally wiped or blown away as you move about. But the belly button -- "navel", if you want to be fancy -- is a sheltered spot, so anything that winds up there stays there until you wash it out. That's why it can be noticed. On a really hot day, when you've been sweating buckets, try rubbing your forearm -- you'll see rolls of stuff (mostly dead skin cells which have been shed but are still sticking to you because of the sweat). This is about the same thing you're finding in your belly-button.

Anyway, shedding skin off the top layer (the "epidermis") is a perfectly normal process -- nothing to worry about. Hollywood stars pay wads of money to get rid of it (called "exfoliation") because getting the dead skin off makes their complexions glow, and here you are getting it for free.

it's like the lint trap in a dryer. it has to go somewhere, so it all goes to one place, which makes it easier to get rid of. just think if it were all over your body!
