Ethanol instead of petrol, or biodiesel instead of diesel

there are a few. ethanol fuels are derived from an agricultural crop. brazil makes an ethanol based off sugar cane, and america makes ethanol from corn.
Biodiesel is also used sometimes, but electric power, solar power and fuel cells are also being developed as alternatives for petrol.

any type of biomass can be converted to petrol given the right processes.

A UIUC researcher recently has published a paper on converting "Swine Effluent" to Petro feedstocks using a thermo-chemical conversion process.

Biodiesel from Soy, or fat waste products from packing facilities

Ethanol can be produced from anything from junk corn to switchgrass and yard waste..

Landfill gases are essentail methane which can be converted for petrol feedstocks using a GTL (Fischer/Tropsch) process from a couple of different companies..

Home brew methods of developing ethanol are still a bit cost prohibitive, but (at least until someone decides food waste products are true feedstocks) one can set up a biodiesel conversion system to convert grease from fast foods to usuable fuel for a few hundred dollars in their own garage.

Contrary to mythbusters, there are subprocesses required to make it truly a diesel type fuel. It requires caustic soda and some filtering systems to make enough production to make it viable in the home market.

Methane gas from decomposing animal waste.
Methanol (a type of alcohol) from fermenting vegatation and distilling.
I just saw Adam and Jamie on Mythbusters run a diesel car on old filtered cooking oil.
