that is not a spirit they are feeling.
when the body is asleep the sympathetic nervous system works so that your body is paralyzed, so that your body does nto carry out the dreams it has and you go walk off a cliff or harm yourself or others.
in essence the body when it goes into r.e.m. sleep it has to be paralyzed. thats what the people who feel heavy and cant move feel, its not a spirit.
I was a physiological psychologist major, one learns this things in neurology and anatomy of a brain what it does to the body and what the nervous system does and is for.
if you didnt have the body paralized when asleep during rem you'd be a nightsleeper or worse with a more difficult sleep disorder problem and you could find yourself in mischief or trouble's way if you did have the many different disorders frm which a person does not get paralized when sleeping.
Im sure you have heard of people found on their roof when asleep or other..

I think if you believe in ghosts they come to you. I have had an experience like you say a lot of people have, only I actually could see a green type aurora and slightly make out a face, that was many years ago. I had that experience because people told me my house was haunted and I believed it and the more I found out about the place the more I saw and heard things. I decided to stop believing so maybe it would stop. I told people I didn't want to hear about ghosts and things stopped happening like that. I now believe it is a demonic spirit you need only to tell it to go and do not come back in the name of Jesus. At least it works for me.

Every mythology has it's own explanations for this occurence, the answer of science is 'sleep paralysis'. I think you've seen "The haunting of Emily Rose" in which a demon supposedly presses Emily into her bed. If I would go for the supernatural explanation here, I'd still say the spirit of a deceased person wouldn't be strong enough. If demons are capable though, it's comforting to know 'daemon' is Greek for 'god' and uhm.. Being pinned down onto your bed by Aphrodite or Athena could be pleasurable rather than scary. I wouldn't fancy Hades lying on top of me though.

Jaghoppasigen is right .. its sleep paralysis
our body goes into a state of paralysis during sleep to stop us acting out our dreams
this presence felt has lead to claims of alien abduction , the old hag syndrome and many more mythical thoughts on strange beings sitting on top of us
a common thing that occurs along side the sleep paralysis is " hypnogogic state " which is hallucinations induced by chemicals released at point of sleep ... this can bring waking dreams and people actually report beings in the room with them etc
it can be all very frightening but there is help out there from people who suffer with this

There has been some medical research into this, and it is apparently just auditory and visual hallucinatory phenomena as you 'cross the threshold' from sleep to waking. There is still some uncertainty about this, especially with the extreme religious sentiments floating about.
The condition is called Sleep Paralysis and it can explain the 'bedroom-oriented' alien abduction/ghost visitation claims.
If that doesn't satisfy you, then there's the whole drugged thing...

Yes, and there have been Lot's of reports of this over the years, and they recon that many go unreported. There have also been a number of Rapes carried out like this, some witnessed, but when this sort of proof comes up, it's always throw out, because by proving it would create panic though out the world, and big problems for the church, when people realise that they haven't been told the truth .

There are reports of such cases, but they are hard to verify. It is more likely that people who experience a weight on their body while sleeping or being half asleep suffer from an anxiety disorder or a related psychological condition.
A psychologist or psychoanalyst could offer help in such cases.

Some people will say that this is a sleep disorder, but I know it's not. I know that because I was tortured in just the way you write about until I consulted a psychic who told me what to do to protect myself. I did what she said, and I've never been bothered since. If sleep apnea or some other physical problem was causing this phenomenon, why would it suddenly disappear like that?

Actually this is not exactly a spirit. It has many names (morna, mora, lamia, succubus and incubus etc.)It is a creature that feeds by your fear of it and from your "wet" dreams. It comes during the night. When you feel it you must stop the fear you have in order to send it away. If it is necessary you can even mock it (it makes it leave easier). Hint:just have fun with that kind of experiences, those creatures can not harm you if you do not let them to.
