good or acceptable behavior by certain people and that is fine. But please tell me how you feel about this. We can send our 18 year old "children" to war - the government does - BUT we feel these "children" are too young to smoke or drink. I UNDERSTAND THE SMOKING AND DRINKING THIS IS BAD BUT -- my point is ---- WAR IS WORSE. Why are they considered adults only when the government decides they want them to be? This just totally blows me away. They may not get addicted to alcohol and if they did get addicted to smoking-if they chose to smoke - they could try and quit but they can't say "I changed my mind" once in Iraq and facing a quick and furious death. If you say they "chose to go to the service" - ok that is fine but the government ALLOWS them to make this choice. See my point?

OBVIOUSLY #3 did not read my question. By the way, I'm in my 40s so it isn't about ME. It is a question about "legal age"

I think you are right. If a boy or a girl is old enough to go get killed in a war then they should be old enough to make that choice to. But then again you are talking about our government do they EVER do anything that makes any since??? NO their to stupid to do anything that makes since!!!

Smoking and drinking are both legal. However, when you begin infringing on the rights of those who do not wish to share your smoke, there in lies the problem. Or if someone chooses to get into a car and has an accident because they're under the influence again they are infringing on other people. When someone smokes and drinks so much that they no longer become a productive member of society again there is a problem. As long as they can pay for the Health care they received for their actions, there is no problem. So my point is, You want to smoke and drink? Go for it. Just be responsible for your own actions and outcome. Is it martini time yet????

Mattinfla, that's not the point of the question. The question is...why can a 18 year old person volunteer to fight and die for his/her country but isn't able to drink, gamble, etc. Yes, they do allow 18 year olds to drink when in the military and on base at the Officer's Club or whatever they choose to call it.
But it's just stupid that an 18 year old can vote and die for his country but can't have a beer. They either need to lower the drinking age or raise the age where you can enlist.

I have a couple friends who joined the military the day they turned 18, and the fact of the matter is this. Many but not all bases/posts allow 18 year old active duty soldiers to drink on base. This should be allowed all over the US but i don't think we will see those days. I still think that drinking is worse than smoking pot even. I have lost more friends from drinking and driving or hit by drunk driver than any whom were smoking pot? so go figure!

You have a valid point.
I've never looked at it like that before.
I don't want my children to go to war/serve in the defence
force.
I hope there is not a conscription in their time it would break
my heart to see them go.
Our children are just on loan to us parents we do the best
we can with them while we still have them.
War is senseless.
I could deal better with the smoking and drinking issues.
I would be there for them
I couldn't be there for them in a wartorn country.
P.S. I come from Australia and the legal drinking age is 18

First, smoking and drinking and drugs and gambling and sexual vice all should be eliminated from society.
The so called age of adulthood should be raised to 21
we should not be able to go to combat without approval of the states by a 2/3 vote of state senators

how do you "eliminate" your list in a free country? i like everything on your list and think it should all be legal, to generate LOTS of new taxes on consenting adults (21 is ok). you hate me having fun, you must be religious?

I do see your point and I have never understood this either. It's kind of hypocritical isn't it?
