If you have the ability you will need a saws all and a mig/tig welder. Also keep in mind that by shortening the gate you might throw off the balance dimentions in regards to the hinges, so you might have to change the hinges as well. If this sounds like too much, look up ornamental iron and or welding in your area.

Wether its steel or actually cast iron is beside the point in my opinion. Welding is like riding a bike or ice skating you can't just rent an arc welder and then go to work.
People spends hours upon hours learing how to weld and at first all you do is make burn marks on steel.
Any one can operate a skill saw but welding is not so easy. Save yourself the frustration and hassle just find a small time local welding guy and see if you can interest him in a small side job for cash or barter.

when you say iron, i assume you mean cast iron. i will tell you right now that welding cast is a tricky thing. i have been welding for years, and still dont have the nack for welding cast. look in the phone book or online and find someone that installs cast iron gates, and fences have them do it. it may cost a bit more than doing it yourself, but if you have never welded cast before chances are you are going to trash the gate in the process and have to buy a new one which will cost even more.
