I've tried different banks before and nobody takes coins, not even American Express currency exchange offices. The only place I can think of that takes them is the airport exchange. Take the coins next time you fly somewhere and exchange them then.

I'm sorry to sound contrarian: Don't do anything to exchange money before your trip, you will loose so much in the exchange and service fees. Just bring your trusty old ATM card, your debit card. On arrival in Canada, stick into the first ATM you see, enter your security code and - presto - now you have Canadian dollars in your hands. The exchange rate is the best between banks, plus about 2 % in service fee. The ATM fee is the same as at home, about $ 1.50 each time. Make few withdrawals and you save on that too. If you buy money at you bank or a bank in Canada you pay at least 5 % in exchange and service fees. If you go to an exchange office, such as at an airport, count on losing about 10 % in exchange. Just to be sure, call the 800- number on your card and tell you bank operator that you are going to Canada.

I know in the north (Michigan, for instance), they take them as if they we're US coins. If you're up there, try one of the banks.

i have had luck with this at any regional airport. I am not sure which on is close to you. But they always have currency changing people! And they are normally really nice too!
