It has recently been suggested that life on earth began much earlier than once thought. The earth is around 4.5 billion years old. But life is thought to have started just 500 million years into its existence - not long after it was first able to really support life.

* 3,500 million years old are the first fossils (prokaryotes)

* 359 million years ago bony fish and insects appear
* 251 miillion years ago reptiles appear
* 145 million years ago was the Jurassic period of dinosaurs
* 23 million years ago primates evolved, including mokeys
* 1.8 million years ago the genus Homo appear (caveman)
* .01 Ice ages; humans appear
