Fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized. That is why fraternal twins often look nothing alike. They look like siblings but not like twins. This is often where you get twins that are a boy and a girl. I know a set of fraternal twins the girl has blue eyes and red hair the boy has brown hair and brown eyes. One looks like the dad and one looks like the mom.

Identical twins occur when the egg after fertilization splits into two halves. From this point on each half of the egg multiplies and divides until there are two identical embyos. These two babies will look very similar, sometimes identical.

Fraternal twins are the result of two eggs being fertilized at the same time. That's why they don't necessarily look alike, and can be different sexes, since they're from both different eggs and sperm, just both are carried at the same time. Identical twins happen when just one egg is fertilized, but when it splits into two halves, the two halves split apart instead of staying together. That's why they have the same DNA and characteristics--they both came from the same egg and sperm.
