actually you need to delete the primary partition and reinstall it and then "reformat" it. was it WinXP, 98, ME? Unless you are reinstalling XP over XP you'll need to change the drive from ntfs to fat or fat32 also. Or if going from Win98 or ME to XP you ll need to change it to ntfs and not fat or fat32. this is not quite as simple as some would assume. I recommend getting some one who knows whats going on to walk you through it. Some proprietary drives will have secret partitions that inhibit reformatting with clean installs and attempts can make restoring original parameters impossible.

It used to be that you would format the drive. Most operating system setup programs (Linux, Windows, etc) will do all the work for you now. All you need to do is determine what you want in there, get yourself a CD containing the setup program and follow the prompts. The formatting, partitioning and such will be taken care of for you.

boot your system with a cd/diskette of win 98 or dos, then write: "format c:" (if your oeprating system is installed on C:), all info on your C drive will be erased, then you can install the new OS step by steb by inserting its CD & restaring comp with the CD.
