The hacks are put in temprarily, and either frozen in, or drilled in. When the curling is done, they take them out and re-freeze the ice. Hockey ice is also very different from curling ice and has to be treated differently anyway...

Skating rink ice is generally pretty awful by curling-club standards, and is usually quite a bit harder to play on.

A hack in a skating rink get's you a 2-5 minute penalty. Otherwise you can't curl in a skating rink the ice surface is not made for curling.

The hack is where the person who is currently throwing the rock pushes off of. All the curling clubs i have been are not on skating ice because the rocks need to go on pebbled ice. To learn more go to my source.
