Unlike what most people believe, sugary flavor is not the deciding factor in what distinguishes a fruit from a vegetable.

In a nutshell (no pun intended), botany defines a 'fruit' as the seed-bearing portion of a plant, or more technically, the "ripened ovary." A vegetable is any other part of the plant besides the ovary; ie, stems, roots, leaves. Therefore, chili peppers, bell peppers, string beans and other legumes, avocados, tomatoes, as just a few examples, are fruits, because they contain SEEDS.

In botany, a fruit is the ripened ovary—together with seeds—of a flowering plant. In many species, the fruit incorporates the ripened ovary and surrounding tissues. Fruits are the means by which flowering plants disseminate seeds.

Vegetable is a culinary term. Its definition has no scientific value, and is somewhat arbitrary and subjective. Any part of an herbaceous plant that humans eat whole or in part is a vegetable, except for culinary fruits and arguably grains, nuts, herbs, and spices.

A fruit is the ripened ovary of a plant. So the acorn is a fruit just like an apple.

Vegetable covers any kind of plant life, even trees. But in everyday language it means food like lettuce, carrots and potatoes.

Fruits have a lot of natural sugar in them. Vegies on the other hand not as much. If you are on a low carb diet you should steer clear of a lot of fruits. Fruits have there seeds that you can physically see were vegies do not.
