"I pledge allegiance"
(I promise to be true)

"to the flag"
(to the symbol of our country)

"of the United States of America"
(each state that has joined to make our country)

"and to the Republic"
(a republic is a country where the people choose others to make laws for them -- the government is for the people)

"for which it stands,"
(the flag means the country)

"one Nation"
(a single country)

"under God,"
(the people believe in a supreme being)

"indivisible,"
(the country cannot be split into parts)

"with liberty and justice"
(with freedom and fairness)

"for all."
(for each person in the country...you and me!)

The pledge says you are promising to be true to the United States of America!

The Pledge of Allegiance is a promise of loyalty to the United States. Here are the words to the Pledge:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America ,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

I know it's already been answered, but I just love it, so I am gonna repeat:

(Standing while facing the flag, right hand over heart)

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

LOVE it!

I think it is fine & dandy that you all are so loyal to your country but I feel that the fact that kids are all made to repeat this every day at schools negates the effect of the message.
If something is learnt parrot fashion while a school it will never have the same meaning as something leart later in life.
Making chidren repeat it every day like that is just the same as reciting a nursery rhyme.
I do not mean to offend anyone, This is only my opinion.

The pledge of allegiance is essentially a means to control the populus.

I find it strange that people love and are willing to die for strips of land divided by theoretical lines in the sand (OK they are mostly physical lines in the sand).

Having said that, for some reason, I would feel compelled to defend my countries patch of Earth.
