I'm thinking its some type of mutated black widow but it had some funky looking designes on its back that I can't describe. It was about 1 inch in lenth and all black except the markings i mentioned. I can't describe the markings on the back because I can't remember the details. The damn thing is long dead now but I sure hope there are no babies. I had my apartment spray for spiders, however, I live in southern Nevada. Any knowledge of such a spider?

At that size I would say it was a young black widow. They start out a light brown colour with white markings and the markings become more red and the body more black as they age. Orange markings on a spider that size sound about right.

Definitely a black widow. As they mature their bodies get darker. I just killed a young one in my bathroom yesterday. I didn't get close enough to checkout whether there was an hourglass on it or not but have seen enough of them to know. My grandma's house is full of them and she refuses to have anyone spray because the pesticides might kill the good bugs. So I'm left going to her house and turning over all the furniture and killing the little boogers by hand. Maybe I should hire somebody myself and have him spray while I take grandma out to lunch sometime. Anyway, It's not a brown recluse. They don't have the orange hourglass. They are brown with a violin shape. It's been a while since I've seen one of those but I don't remember the violin shape being orange either. Also, another way to tell a black widow is that they will move more slowly than other spiders.

It could be a brown widow spider. Remember that the best way to avoid being poisoned by biting spiders; is to stop biting spiders. Good luck.

It's probably a "mock" spider, you know the harmless kind that only LOOK like the deadly ones to scare off predators. But talk to an exterminator or an entomologist for specifics.
