Could be several reasons:
1. System bogging down with too many applications running at startup
2. Virus
3. A peripheral device (printer, scanner, external hard drive, etc.) is not functioning properly, not allowing proper startup
4. Operating system has corrupt or missing files needed at startup
5. A BIOS problem
6. A motherboard problem (an actual had-wire electrical connection gone bad)

Hi,
Can you tell us more details like: Which Operating System(s) it has, Config of your PC (Motherboard Make), and drives it has.
Most Desktops are configured to boot from removable devices like Floppies, CD-ROM etc. In such a case, you need to change the Boot order. It can be done in BIOS.
Provide more info as asked above, I would be able to suggest some improvements.

A system will take longer to boot after a software upgrade.
If you have not just done an upgrade, it is likely that you hav viruses, spyware and other bad stuff running on your PC.
There are free programs to clean up your system.

Did you any new software it may be the problem. Sometimes CDRoms become defective and the machine takes a while to recognise the rom/writer this may be the cause. Yes you should scan the hard drive with lavasoft's Adware SE Personal it is very much effective free adware remover.
