the term "there is a light that never goes out" is, if i remember rightly is a term refering to the light of the spiritual realm, i.e the light one sees when death is near, its supposed to be a magnetic alluring light that draws you (the spirit after death) into it and accross to the "other side", Hence in true form it is indeed an ever lasting light.
It's a beautiful if dark song, like most smiths songs quite articulate, poetic and endearing.
Basically great music by Mr Morrissey & Mr Marr.

p.s comparing micheal bolton to the smiths is like comparing a Boy Band to The Beatles, it just is not going to stand up. ;-)

sometimes the title of a song reflects the feelings, thoughts or emotions of the band, singer or writer but at the end of a day dont always expect to hear the title of a song as part of its lyrics eg. Dilemma by Nelly and Kelly Rowland

I think Morrissey is describing his undying love for someone in the song, and the title meaning his love will always be there for them, like a light that never goes out.

i think its because of his external hope of his loved one ... morrisey may not be so miserable after all .... by the way have you analysed the lyrics of micheal bolton ... he has some really deep sh!t going on.

btw ptj 69 ... yeah i agree i always found that some of the smith lyrics were a bit similar to steps :). Don't diss the bolton.

didn't want to seem as depressed as the song itself. It more of an name they though of at the time which was good and in his mind it related to a story in his life and has meaning just to him etc
