Yes, Thailand accommodation can be incredibly cheap. I was there last summer and the most i spent on accommodation was £4 a night (the cheapest was about £1.20 in Chiange Mai). Obviously these prices are for the budget hotels that have no luxuries, some times not even hot water. Prices are obviously more expensive in the big cities (e.g. Bangkok) and remote islands (ko phi phi). I would recommend booking your accommodation once out there rather than from home as you pay commission if you book it through an agent - an essential is the lonely planet guide as they list accommodation for most of the places you would want to go, they list the full range of prices also from budget to luxury. Before you agree to stay at a hotel ask to view the room to make sure it is up to a standard thay you can put up with. Everything else is also cheap, food, markets, and transport. Watch out for cons though...
Have a good time - Thailand is an incredible place. Try and get of the beaten path - avoiding regularly travelled destinations as you will get a much more authentic experience!

i have been in Thailand last summer , i spend 15 days in Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok.
i surely recommend phuket, and u can spend 2 days maximum in Bangkok.
everything is cheap, you can find hotels for various budgets, same for the restaurants, you can have a lunch for 5$ or for 100 $! it all depends on where u r planning to eat.
never buy stuff without asking the buyer to reduce the price, you may buy a stuff for 10$ but if u know how to deal with the buyer , you will get it for 3 $. Believe me,i tried all this.
it is a bit costly to get their, but the overall budget will be much more limited then the one for Europe, where the hotel prices are very high for same category.

It is cheep compared to Europe and North America but you still get what you pay for. I choice to stay in nicer places for around $80 US a night and they were pretty nice. In Koh Phangnan I stayed in a virtual palace for $50 US a night. It was so beautiful. And I think Koh Phangnan is the only place to go in the islands. Not as touristy as every where else and nicer for girls (ie, not a lot of hookers). Have a good trip.
