He though he was going to be killed by the kid. The whole moive is about racism and sexism, and the results of it.
Ultimately, everyone felt the ramifications for their actions/inactions

Color played a part, in my opinion. He was so confused by all the racial tension he'd been caught up in it left him to question his own ideas of good and bad. Indeed, he thought he was going to be killed by the guy but why? Had it been a white guy in a business suit or kid in casual dress would he have killed them as quickly or offered them some gum and opted to stop and have a cup of coffee?

I think he freaked out and thought the kid had a knife or gun or something. It is a very paradoxical film. The non racist cop kills the black kid, and the racist cop saves the black women. I just love it!

Yes in the beginning he was racist. But when he rescued the woman from her car you could tell he regretted what he had done to her before and I think thats when he started to realise that we are all human and there is good and bad in everyone.

no his dad got shafted by illconcieved PC polotics, they gave his cleaning tender to african americans ... i like that crash dealt with racism, which i get the idea is not talked about much in the us ... but i'm from the uk and really think we have a good tollerant racial understanding, but i found crash (which is aimed at americans), very jumbled and patronising, like an e-grade gcse media studies project ... how it won an oscar god knows.

I did like the film but...
It did nothing (in my opinion) for racial or sexual in some cases stereotypes, e.g ludacris's character robbing that lady after his poetic speech about being stereotyped, the black receptionist wid an attitude etc. snobbish white lady played by sandra bullock. it was just entertainment, showing us stuff that we already know happens. But most of it is not realistic.
The white cop saving the lady he sexually assualted in the end? Please.

he assumed the guy was getting a gun in his pocket, so he killed him first, realizing, in the end, that it wasn't a gun.
