The best way to learn this is to listen to the music.
There's Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Euro Metal, Speed Metal, 80 Hair Band Metal, Grindcore, Pop Metal, Industrial Metal, Nu Metal, etc? Also, you have Punk, like the Ramones, Sex Pistols and the Clash (early stuff). As for Hardcore, there's a long history of some good bands. Most of the current stuff is just okay. It's hard to do something original in HC. I like old stuff like Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, DRI (pre-Crossover), D.I., Adolescents, Black Flag, Sick of it All, even some Helmet. There's a Death Metal/HC crossover band called Catastrophic that's pretty good in combining both realms. For rock you have Led Zeppelin, The Cult, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, etc. Take some time and listen to the music. That's the best way to know.
