I have a friend who owns a jewelry store, and has been a jeweler for nearly 20 years. He says that there is no need to buy anything special, or to make a special concoction. Just use a little bit of liquid Tide laundry detergent with some water in a small bowl. Use your hands to swirl and agitate it for a couple minutes, then rinse it and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth. He also told me a long time ago NEVER to use an old toothbrush to scrub my rings because it can loosen gems.

Dirt and grime can accumulate behind set stones and the best procedure is usually an ultrasound bath which most jewellers will do for a very small amount. While they are at the jewellers, you might like to get a valuation for insurance purposes.
Just warm soapy water should be fine, though, and a very soft bristle brush, like a toothbrush, used gently.

Homemade Jewelry Cleaner
Ingredients:
1 glass jar or bowl
1 cup hot water (heating water in microwave for a minute or two is hot enough)
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dish washing liquid (Joy, Dawn, etc.)
1 piece aluminum foil (big enough to fit on the bottom of jar or bowl - shiney side up)
1 plastic spoon
1 towel
Instructions: Place aluminum foil in bottom of jar or bowl. Heat water and pour into jar or bowl. Add baking soda and salt to water and dish washing liquid. Stir slightly. Place jewelry on top of foil and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove jewelry with plastic spoon and rinse in cool water. Dry jewelry on a towel thoroughly.
Polish with something like Flitz (non - skin irritating polish comes in liquid or cream) to keep jewelry from tarnishing for up to 6 months. This works well for gold-filled, brass, german (nickle) silver, and sterling silver. Can be used to clean jewelry with freshwater pearls, shell cameos and mother of pearl with no problem. Works just like the product called "Silver Magic" only cheaper.
