You can continue to eat chocolate if you're prepared to make other sacrifices - cut down on other dairy products, switch to skimmed milk, use spreads instead of butter, cut out anything too fatty like sausages, bacon etc, don't eat anything fried, and no pastries/cakes etc.

You could add in things like porridge to your diet which help to bring down cholesterol, you can also drink those benechol drinks (expensive but effective), and you should increase your exercise which increases the levels of HDL, the "good" cholesterol and will thus decrease your good:bad cholesterol ratio.

Use root ginger every day. Cut off a chunk about the size of your thumb, slice it thinly and soak it in water for a few hours. Then strain out the ginger slices, heat up that water and drink it. My mother lowered her cholesterol by 3 points over a month with this technique.

A common medical technique for cholesterol reduction is to use Lipitor, but this is only available on prescription.

My own technique for keeping cholesterol down is to cook and eat food with the absolute minimum of saturated or additional fat. Trim skin and excess fat off chicken breast, only use extra virgin olive oil when I fry (and even then only a tablespoon for a pan-ful of meat), allow minced meats such as steak and beef to cook in their own residual fat, and so on.

I had a healthcheck some time ago, with an electronic cholesterol meter, and it showed a reading below the minimum level detectable by the meter (i.e., < 3.5). So I guess I'm doing something right.

My dad ate oatmeal everyday for breakfast. It lowered his cholesterol by 30 points, in 3 months! If you don't like eating oatmeal. Try oatmeal cookies or oatmeal muffins. Dark chocolate supposedly helps reduce cholesterol as well. The yolk in eggs is very bad for cholesterol. That increases cholesterol a lot. So stay away from that. You should start using olive oil in your foods. It also helps. Lean red meat is okay a couple of times per week. When eating chicken, get rid of the skin. Low fat dairy is okay in moderation. Avoid fried foods and bake as much as possible. Avoid trans fats, which are very common in fried and store bought bakery items. Lots of fruits and veggies are great.

Eat whole grains, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, reduce red and processed meat consumption. Eat lots of fruit and veg, chocolate is okay as a treat and dark chocolate is good for you ( that's 70% + cocoa solids). Regular exercise and not too much alcohol also help.

My mom lowered her 10 points in a month by eating Cashews and Cheerios daily. She ate regular stuff too, but she had some each daily and her doctor said it is working! Dark chocolate is good for you as well.

Porridge is one of the best things. I hate it but make a drink of porridge oats, dried fruit and milk at night, leave it in the fridge to soften overnight and in the morning I add a banana and blend it. Then drink it obviously.
