Never, we will be dead by then, and we will become the natural resources

The question addresses an interesting subject but is more complex than implied by the question. Resources don’t run out but are replaced by alternative resources when they become too expensive to use. For example, trees were once the primary source of energy generation but as they were used they became increasingly expensive until other energy sources (e.g. coal, etc.) became easier to use and less expensive. Not only do trees still exist, there are sections of the world where they are heavily planted to replace what was used.

Each resource has its own version of this cycle.

Certainly Homo Sapiens Sapiens can cause changes to our environment, but considered in the totality of things such changes are relatively small. The planet will continue on no matter our little efforts.

Unlikely that that will happen - as soon as any one critical resource is used up, there will be noone around to exploit all the others.

That said, fossil fuels will be used up sooner or later, and will have to be replaced by regenerative ones. (Fossil fuels aren't critical for the survival of the human species, though - burning them up might lessen the survival chances, but that's for Al Gore to discuss.)

The question is why wait with the replacement until it's too late? In Sweden there is a 14-year-plan to get independent of fossil fuels. Technologically, there is no challenge at all. The logistics take some work.

Some scientist say the planet has already gone through some 90% of it's habitable life span. Even takeing that into account we still have millions of years before the planet becomes unlivable. Unless of course we hasten it's demise. In which case it's harder to give a prediction - it could be several thousand years it could be 100, depends on how we behave.

At the rate we're going? I give it a few thousand years or so. Billions of tons of crude oil are shipped to the U.S every day, and every day billions more are used for various 'needs'. I believe there are a lot of other, more useful, people/enviornment friendly resources out there, it's just a matter of letting go of the mind sets that our government represenitives hold, and taking steps to make the change.

I think a lot needs to be done to educate people in their choices and also we need to get going with wind power and hydro electric power in order to get some new resources under way before it is too late.
