I want to get an MP3 player for my mum. It needs to be easy to use so have a reasonably clear display of song info and maybe a direct USB connection. Transferring files needs to be straightforward. Preferably in red or blue. Small/light for travelling/walking. For storing CD's converted to MP3. About 512Mb to 1 or 2GB. Up to £100.

If you want something with a direct USB connection I fink you're pretty much limited to the Sony NWE-003, I think its £80 for a 1GB from Amazon UK. The most easy to use ones are those that dont use proprietary software, so that leaves out anything by Apple, Sony and Dell. Try the Samsung YP-Z5 or iRiver H10 Junior (both £99 and 1GB, from advancedmp3players.co.uk). Word of advice.......DO NOT buy a Creative branded one, I've had two so far that have stopped working about 1-3 months after the warranty expires, and the cretins dont even agree to repair it after i said I would pay for the repairs. Shop around, try seeing if there are any Samsung YP-U1's left in stock, they have a direct connection and are easy to use....be about £50 for a 512MB but no color screen.

DO NOT waste your money for an iPod Shuffle. There are lots of other mp3 players with better qualities & more facilities:

I recommend you a Creative Zen, you can see the models on the website(http://www.creative.com). If she doesn't need a color display for photos, etc & a small black & white display is enough for her, then buy her a Creative Zen Nano Plus; it comes in ten vibrant colors, uses only one AAA battery, you can recharge it so easily, & carry some with you to change it when you don't have a charger. It has FM radio, FM recording & voice recorder. It's small & light; come with two capacities: 512MB for $59 and 1GB for $69. I think even 512 MB is enough but 1GB can be an ideal choise. It doesn't need a cable, you can connect it directly to the PC with the USB.

But if you can a bit more than $100, I suggest you Creative Zen V, which is out recently(even less than a week). It has all the facilities the Nano Plus has, unless the radio; but you can encode CDs to it directly, it has got a 1.5 inch color LCD display & supports .jpeg photo files, & also WMA & WAV audio files besides the MP3 files & lots more, but the price for 1GB capacity is $119 & the colors are black & orange, or white and orange. This one is also small but not as small as Nano Plus. And it has a built-in lithium battery that has more life time than a AAA battery.

Hope it's useful for you.

You'll Probaly need a flash mp3 player if you plan on walking with it alot, beause Hardrive mp3 players have moving parts. but I think you should check out Creative Zen Muvos, they come in a variety of Size options, and they have a TON of features, and most of them are under a $100. I own a Creative and I'd recommend to anyone that they should get one instead of an Ipod.

Hope That Helps.

I don't know how one hundred pounds transfers into in American dollars but the iPOD nano is so easy to use. All you do is plug in your CD. Click on it on the left Go to file add file to folder. Scan through and find the CD then go to the track you want and open. Once that is done drag the song from you library to you iPOD. It can't get any more simple than that.

my mp3 has 300 songs so far and it's a 1GB which is ok!
Better to spend a little extra to get a bigger GB one! Save more on it then!

As you seem to know what you want, I'd suggest going into a retailer and asking what they've got that meets your specification - but do go to a store where they know their products. I've got an FCUK one which is simple to use, (but orange).
