what is inking in illustration.....

it involves going over the sketch with ink, but also can include the shading of the artwork. black and white comic books are inked. its considered quite a skill because of limited amount of colour used. there are also different styles to it. japan, england and america have three quite distinct styles of inking.

Inking is the process in the production of comic books or illustrated graphic novels where a preliminary pencil sktch of a scene is "inked" over. This means the pencil lines are selectively traced over to enhance their qualities with ink (or more commonly a marker these days) and sometimes (but not always) the spaces defined by lines can be washed in or filled with ink. In a color comic or illustration the process can be taken further by the application of color wash or fill. A lot of this process was once done manually using special graphic pens and brushes, but now most of this process is done digitally on a computer. The pencil sketch is scanned, and then color and ink are appled in computer programs. I know the woman who did a lot of the inking and coloring for "Elfquest", and she worked on a Mac using Photoshop to apply color.
