I know a great house in the south west of France that you can rent out - It's called Domaine des roujoux it's a wonderful farm house and the family that own it live near and have kids of their own and help you out with everything. We've been a couple of times and every time we return and want to go back. Check out their web site. It explains how to get there and about the region - which incidentally is really pictureesque.

If you're going to France the best place to be is the french riviera
and even better on NICE or BOLLIEUR where you're 10 minutes from the MONTE CARLO PRINCIPATE and about 40 minutes from CANNES...and the place to be for new years is on the street in front of the Monte Carlo Cazino...you dont even need to get inside since you'l have the kids with u...trust me it's gonna be a experience that's going to less for a life time...

Nice place in France, depending on the experience you want - i would divide 2 categories : urban, or country life style.
Paris - for new Year's period - its a bit pricey, but wow that's amazing and there's so much things to do, visiting museum, churches, cathedral, gardens, or just walk along the Seine.
Or country wise - if you prefer - I would recommend visiting the Alps or the Pyrenees - cos you'll get snow for sure, and get a chance skying or meet nice people there too.

Fly to Nice and head into the hills above St Tropez - New Year's not gonna be really cheap anywhere, but if you stay out of the immediate area (try Cogolin, Grimaud, Garde Freinet, Plan de la Tour) you should find an apartment reasonably priced... many UK ex pats there, so hopefully a few of them will decide not to use their flat over the New Year....

French Riviera, I just came back from there and you can find accomodations at reasonable prices, and it is gorgeous. Make sure you take a day trip to Monaco, it is worth it, and you can eat there for budget traveller prices.
Have fun
