Mount Everest is the highest mountain, and the Himalaya mountain range is the highest mountain range. Above the ground, the mountains reach above 8000 meters, but the "roots" of the mountains extend below the surface 65 000 meters!! Mountains are like icebergs - we only see the top!

It all depends on where you measure from. Assuming you're asking about the tallest mountain on Earth....

If you're measuring from sea level, it's Mt. Everest on the border of Nepal and China.

If you're measuring from the base of the actual mountain itself, it's Mauna Kea on the big island in Hawai'i, USA.

If you're measuring from the center of the Earth, it's Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador which is just south of the equator. (The Earth bulges at the equator and flattens a bit at the poles due to centrifugal - or rotational - forces.)

The tallest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest (or Chomolugma Peak). 8,848 meters (29,028 feet).
And the highest peak from it's base is Mauna Kea - 9,000 meters (30,100 feet).
And... the tallest mountain in our solar system is Olympus Mons (Mount Olympus), on planet Mars - 25 Km tall. ;)
