because every person has an individual body chemistry and hence body scent that will combine and even chemically react with any fragrance, any fragrance you choose, however random, will smell different on you than it might on someone else.
this gives you a lot of options in an area that frankly already has a lot of options available (be they high in price). in terms of quality, more expensive perfumes and colognes for men or women are so expensive partly because you are paying for the brand, and partly because they contain much less alcohol than cheap perfumes, are designed more carefully and with more complexity, and the way they are actually produced chemically is in fact rather expensive. the first time i bought a "real" perfume, i spent about $80 and almost had a heart-attack. but, then i forced myself to realize that i might spend $80 on a dress that i will wear to 3 weddings and never wear again. think of it as an investment-- you'll get a lot out of a good bottle. like a favorite piece of clothing you're going to wear all day every day for the next year or two. and while you're thinking of it as an investment, do a little research. go into a department store and throw yourself on their alter. tell them you don't know anything about perfume but you're interested in buying some. by the time you leave you'll not only have samples of every major designer scent, but you'll have learned that there are masculine and feminine scents, distinct from male and female scents, some are floral, some are oriental, some are fruit-based, some sweet, some citrus. take a trusted friend or two with you (preferably one guy and one girl) and have them smell the scents for you too. don't buy a scent you hate the smell of because the salesclerk tells you when she wears it to the bar men flock to her and compliment her on it. buy what makes you happy. and buy something in a cool looking bottle. that's all! sorry for going on and on. good luck!

There is no one right or wrong perfume. I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but several ppl can wear the same scent, and it will smell a bit different on everybody.
