Lightning occurs when small particles of ice are lifted on warm air currents (normally when the ground is warm/ summer) and mix with rain and electrical charge is formed. The power in a flash can vary depending on how much the thundercloud is charged but the charge can be around 300000Amps. The flash you see is actually the charge going upwards not down, as this is much brighter than the strike which hit ground a split second earlier. The flickering light is actually more than one strike in the same place . A strike is no more than an inch across. There has been recordings of lightning travelling over 100 miles before discharging to earth. The thunder is the sound of the air heating up rapidly to 50,000 deg f and expanding around the strike.Do not where metal helmets with big metal spikes on during lightning, it can damage your health.

Lightning is an electrostatic discharge. This electrical discharge is accompanied by a flash of visible light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. The electric current passing through the discharge channel rapidly heats and expands the air into plasma creating a loud acoustic retort which we call thunder.
