Imagine twelve, full-size pick-up trucks stacked on top of each other. That's how much one male African elephant weighs. There are other species of elephants, namely the Asian and the Indian, but they are much smaller than the African. The African elephant is the king among the giants on land. No other land animal comes close to the size of these creatures. It would take 170 full-grown men to make up the same weight as one elephant. The noise of an elephant digesting its food (when its tummy's growling) can be heard up to 600ft/183m away. Elephants actually have control over their digestive processes because they are able to stop the sounds of digestion when they sense danger. Here are some other cool elephant factoids:

· In one year an elephant can drink 15,000 gal/57,000 liters of water

· Male elephants usually weigh about 16,500 lbs/7,425 kgs and are about 20 ft/6.1m long

· Elephants have only FOUR teeth, which they can lose and replace up to six times

· African elephants can live as long as 70 years

Extant species: African Bull Elephant

All time largest: certain sauropods dwarfed elephants even more so than elephants dwarf humans; other dinosaurs, especially the large carnivorous ones could also look down upon the elephant in relation to size.
Examples include: Brachiosaurus, Seismosaursus, Tyrannosaurus Rex

The African (savannah) elephant ( Loxodonta africana) is the largest land animal, followed by the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) then the Asian elephant (Elaphus maximus). The white rhino is the fourth biggest.

The elephant

the largest in terms of weight/size would be the elephant (probably african over indian though they mostly differ in the size of their ears)

the largest in terms of height/size would be the giraffe

the above of course are extant animals

in terms of *extinct* animals (dinos): the seismosaurus was tallest and longest when fully extended (84ft/25.6m tall, 150ft/45.7m long) but it is estimated to come in second in weight (~200,000pounds/90,720kg) behind the argentinosaurus, which while not quite as tall and long (70ft/21.4m tall, 120ft/36.6m long...coming in 2nd to seismo in these two categories) is thought to have been the heaviest (~220,000pounds/99,792kg)

these of course are the largest known...who knows what we haven't yet found or dug up
