Hello
Sorry, I amn't agree with what mr .... wrote that there is no need of booking when you are travelling to India. I just like to point out on the fact that everybody is different. So everybody wants to enjoy their holiday in a different way. Few wants to enjoy their holiday in a more relaxed and organised way & few want to be more adventurous and spent lots of time in searching for an accommodation and transport arrangements. Some times you even dont find an accommodation & transport in peak season of India ( September - March).
I just want to give a simple logic that if locals means Indians book accommodation and transport before travelling with in their Country India. Then you can better understand that how much necessary is advance booking before travel. If you need any reference or details will be happy to reply.
But please be clear about India ( as I am a resident of Delhi, India and a regular traveller) that you must book in advance before visiting India, if you want to enjoy your holidays. And one more thing, In India all sort of packages are available right from Budget package to an Ultimate Luxury package of Royal King.
Best regards

DON'T BUY A PACKAGE TOUR TO INDIA
I don't want to get 'your back up' but India is so cheap that you will be paying 5 to 10 times the actual cost of just going to India on your own
'don't be a tourist be a traveler'.
I've been going to India 3 months a year since 1986 and let me tell you once you are in India 'Sob cuch Melega'='anything is possible.'...
Be adventurist and book a flight to New Delhi..and hit the ground running..
My girlfriend and I spend $20 (11.11 pounds) US a day for lodging, food, travel in India, and our clothes and things we buy for ourselves....
If you go on a package tour you will be a captive to the tour operators...suppose you are in a town you really like....sorry the tour says you must leave today...Too bad.
Fly into new Delhi..get a good travel guide 'Lonely Planet' is OK..
Don't go now (May-Sept.) either too HOT or monsoon....go Oct-Dec or Mid Jan-March are ideal......
OK suppose you spend $50.00 US a day (and you are using the pound that's $1.80 to the dollar or over 80RP to the pound). You can live like a king in India for that amount.
OK it's about 6am and I am beat...Post a question ...I.E. Dublin Seand D wants more advise..I'll be glad to advise you where to go and how to get there and even where to stay!

Be sure any travel agent who gives you a brochure may be costly though may be highly efficient. First you decide what do you want to see in india . Information may be obtained on the net about all the places/regionand the best season to go. Chart out your own programme.ittenary and then talk to a travel agent.

Sunway.ie, indiandreams.ie, ebookers.ie, destinations.ie, abbeytravel.ie, exodus.co.uk and peregrineadventures.co.uk all offer package holidays to India.
Exodus and Peregrine would be the best of those in my opinion - really interesting packages that also promote responsible tourism.
For most trips to India you'll have an unavoidable stop in London along the way.
